whats the oldest car you would buy

whats the oldest car you would buy

Postby Salman » Mon Feb 17, 2014 6:33 pm

Assuming its in very good condition, low mileage for its age etc etc...

And also something you were planning on keeping for atleast 3-5 years......

Would 10 years old be the limit? or 15? 20 etc etc..

Just some thoughts on what age you would draw the line at?

Regards,

A ten year may be appealing but remember to ensure the cam belt has been changed and not due for another one imminently, have a good look at all of the hoses. Rubber deteriorates with the passage of time and continually going hot then cold.

If the price is right and all is working with no funny knocks or clatter then yes I would consider it.

I much prefer the traditional timing chain arrangement to the modern external cambelt. Catastrophic timing chain failure is a pretty rare event.

And as a lover of what are now regarded somewhat loosely as "vintage" cars, given a suitable place to keep it nice and the right price and condition, I'd rather be driving a 40-year-old car than a modern one.

I prefer a modern car any time. What are largely regarded as "character" are usually faults and are a pain in the neck.

so long as its looked after any age prefer the older ones tbh as the new ones are so sophisticated you very often cant fix or change things yourself they make them so you have to take them to a main dealer and get bent over for the cost

Funnily enough I think it was BMW that introduced the cam belt but have now switched back to chain. IIRC.

And don't mix up electronic ignition with electronically controlled fuel injection. Electronic ignition co-existed with traditional carburettors for many years, particularly so during the 1970's/1980's.
