..another VW car (Polo, Golf). What do you think I should look for, given that once I've bought it, I can't then afford any subsequent repairs or another car again if it goes wrong.

I had a VW Polo 1.0L S reg and now the engine has failed.

Polos are usually reliable. How did your engine fail?

Let's bend some conrods!

^^ update 5/2/11 - Conrods now bent. Nobody died. :) RIP test subject #2

Test subject 3 now slotted in :D

I have never drawn up closely to the car in front at traffic lights with the intention of buffering up.

In that case I'll keep my fingers crossed, we or I have gone for something, it's a replacement Polo, same engine size but with the added bonus of power steering and what so far seems like a much smoother drive and gearbox, it's white and was for £1300 most of which needs to get paid back! so I hope the independence it gives can last but at least I've got the licence which I've so far had for less than a month.

One slight thing which is a disadvantage from the last one is there is nowhere to set my MiniDV standard video camera down so I can make videos of scenic routes (already done quite a few in North Wales & Cheshire and am thinking of starting a Youtube channel for them). But now I have a sloping dashboard, so it's quite a specialist question, is there any way I can mount specialist camera equipment to get a decent picture quality for some good road videos? Even better would there be a way of professionally mounting your Mini DV camera, I admit that I only had it strapped down with parcel tape before, not great but it worked and the result was an excellent video. Now I can no longer do it I might as well admit that's what I used to do! Is it impossible with a bigger Mini DV camera and I'll have to get a more specialist minicam like the Contour for example?

I'm not sure what happened with the last cars engine, I thought as a novice it could be the oil but the garage thought it wasn't all that low, all I know is I lost power and was reduced to 3 out of the 4 cylinders and their opinion was that it would be too costly to replace the whole engine, maybe it was for the best.

It sounded and drove pretty bad after it happened, but I'm a novice so it could have been something quite fixable, but that's the problem and why I perhaps made the decision to move on from the car was that once you are chasing repairs like that you can be throwing good money after bad and you're living on the edge, shame that I've now had to get one without the flat dashboard as I didn't want the search to go on forever and ever and it seemed like mainly the older cars were the ones offering the flat dashboard, so now I have that problem to solve, how to get a camera mounted properly in this one.

Still the first VW Polo served us quite well, I got it for £500 and did mistakes learning in it like, changing from 4th to 1st, overrevving, hitting big potholes, going 70mph continually on A55 etc, perhaps it took it's toll

Something as simple as a faulty sparkplug/glowplug can cause disastrous driving on x amount of cylinders

If you're driving a fairly old car and you're not a mechanic (or have one in the family) you really need to tune in to local gossip about who the reliable independant mechanics are. If a VW engine packs up then there is a good reason. If the mechanic doesn't come clean so that someone else can fix it then tell everyone around that he's useless (him as well). If you have a rep as demanding then only the good guys will work for you - but you need to pay them the going rate.
As for your camera you need to get someone sensible (engineering or design student) to make you a mount. If you're running cars as old as you say then there's no loss in mounting a custom bracket to the dashboard.
Being a novice isn't an excuse - you need to get clued up, both in mechanics and technical photography There are courses available in both From your original post maybe you need a driving course as well - rubbish driving is a great way to knacker an engine and clutch.
